Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2018 Verified Purchase Maria Callas' personal story is related, but perhaps more important are the film clips of her actually performing. What a voice! And I might add that I am not an opera fan at all, but I am one who truly appreciates the talent and learned skill of opera performers. This is a very interesting film but, sadly, the viewer learns what a tragic life Ms. Callas actually lived, proving that fame and entertainment success do not equal a happy, fulfilled life. Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2018 Verified Purchase I am stunned more people are not interested enough or familiar at least with one the greatest opera singers of this century. Absolutely fascinating. What an extraordinary life Callas led that sounds cliche but was truly Greek tragedy. Her voice and artistry were unequaled and yet could not replace the love that eluded her. This lovely young woman born with a rare gift that only brought her sadness, loneliness and betrayal. Ironic. Profound. Sad. Life promises nothing. Reviewed in the United States on August 25, 2018 Verified Purchase A complete portrait of a truly colorful singer, actress, teacher, celebrity & opera phenomenon. Wonderful firsthand interviews and archival footage of Callas interviews and performances. The interviews with DiStefano are insightful. Other recollections are provided by Franco Zeffirelli, Carlo Maria Guilini, and many others. Though possessed of an instrument that among her competitors, was not as powerful or beautiful, Callas delivered the story carried on an honest connection to her characters. She will be the gold standard for great vocal actresses for long time. Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2019 Verified Purchase First time I've ever seen (for all intents and purposes) Maria Callas perform live. Off the subject, but still related, I just lost my Father (at nearly 92) a couple weeks ago and in one of the last conversations we had we were talking about the fact that he exposed we 4 children to nearly every kind of music when we were growing up and how much appreciation I had always had for that FACT. Then I said "But I'm not a big fan of country-western or opera". His response was "You need to give opera another chance" and NOW I understand completely why he said that. Maria's voice was absolutely heartrendingly divine. Nearly like the voice of what I would call an angel and absolutely god-given. I think my Dad is smiling right now up in Heaven! I now know precisely what he was trying to tell me w/o many words at all-no hard-sell required!! Reviewed in the United States on April 10, 2019 Verified Purchase I "discovered" her years ago and it always stayed in my head that she had most beautiful operatic voice I had ever heard. So anything about her is always riveting for me. I read a great Callas bio by Arianna Huffington and I realize that no one will ever perfectly capture what some people want her to be or to know about her. For me, she is something of an enigma, and yet, as a passionate artist and woman myself I understand many things about her so well. As for those who criticized the documentary for commenting about her childhood weight and image issues, the fact is that the "ugly duckling who becomes a swan" theme is a female rite of passage for many of us, and so I am glad it was shown here. It was so much of who she was, especially as she matriculated into the fifties, the "feminine mystique" years, when Jackie Kennedy, ironically, also came of age and was hailed as an icon of beauty. If you weren't a beautiful teenager, you were nothing, and no man would want you. Many of us grew into our attractiveness based, a lot, on our self-confidence as artists, and simply because nature had other things in store for us than normative social expectations. These expectations are, sadly, still with us, and for that reason the story of Callas - torn between art, love and beauty, is a both an inspiration and a cautionary tale. Above all, however, her voice and the huge drama she could harness to it, live on, thanks to documentaries like this one and recordings of her glorious talent. Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2019 Verified Purchase I love Callas and have read biographies about her. Rather than discussing how she overcame a difficult childhood, endured ups and downs in her career, and became the greatest opera singer of all time, the filmmaker instead chose to focus on interviews with people who call Maria fat and ugly repeatedly. Seriously, every five minutes, there is a reference to her appearance. It's boring, unnecessary, and does not do Maria justice. Shame on whoever made this film! Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2019 Verified Purchase I was very blessed as a child to have seen Miss Callas perform in Tosca for the very first live opera I had ever attended. She was a great woman who found she too had feet of clay as a person as we all do. One is not always fortunate to grasp the gold ring while on the merry-go-round of life. She has always brought me both deep happiness and sorrow through her being in all its manifestations. A day seldom passes that I do not listen to her music. Thank you very much Miss Callas. Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2018 Verified Purchase Beautiful Maria Callas. The reason this excellent documentary is that I wanted to know who Maria Callas is. I know she was an ex-wife of Aristotle Onassis little bit. I don't remember she was alive when I was a little girl but few years later, I heard about her little bit. Interesting about her. She sang as a foreign language beautifully that I don't understand. Her voice was loud when she sang an opera. My father liked listening to her singing. It is gratifying that Palmer lets performers speak for themselves rather than speak for them. 8 people found this helpful Report abuse.

Magnificent, beautiful and legendary. Critics Consensus Maria by Callas offers an intimate look at the life of a brilliantly talented artist whose absorbing story matches the operatic heights reached by her work. 92% TOMATOMETER Total Count: 75 70% Audience Score User Ratings: 254 Maria By Callas Ratings & Reviews Explanation Maria By Callas Videos Photos Movie Info Tom Volf's MARIA BY CALLAS is the first film to tell the life story of the legendary Greek/American opera singer completely in her own words. Told through performances, TV interviews, home movies, family photographs, private letters and unpublished memoirs-nearly all of which have never been shown to the public-the film reveals the essence of an extraordinary woman who rose from humble beginnings in New York City to become a glamorous international superstar and one of the greatest artists of all time. Assembling the material for the film took director Volf four years of painstaking research, which included personal outreach to dozens of Callas's closest friends and associates, who allowed him to share their personal memorabilia in the film. When recordings of Callas's voice aren't available, Joyce DiDonato, one of contemporary opera's biggest stars, reads her words. Reviewed in the United States on March 30, 2019 Verified Purchase I have already viewed this video 3 times and see nuances each time that increase my appreciation of this intelligent and remarkably gifted operatic star.. Maria Callas was the ultimate musical diva, with the power and integrity to give her best and to survive the horrendous betrayal by Onassis in marrying the shallow Jackie Kennedy, who went, as she was raised to do - to the highest bidder. Yet, so great was the power of love Madame Callas had for Aristo (as she calls him in the video), she was able to surmount it and triumph in his return to her. Her voice is still thrilling after 40 + years she has been gone- every gesture in her interpretations of the grand operatic selections proves her the consummate performer, worthy of the adoration she inspired. I was additionally surprised by her verbal acuity in the interviews and portions of the letters (read by a marvelous Callas substitute) which she sent to her longtime mentor, who seems to have fulfilled as well the nurturing mother Maria sorely lacked from childhood on. Quite apparent from the outset is how much effort, beginning as a 13 year -old operatic student, she afforded the classical works that eventually made her the star she became. We see the devotion to her miraculous talent and the honor she accorded to the brilliant composers whose works she interpreted so brilliantly. The one thing she could not surmount was her shocking death at 53. It is stated she died of a heart attack. I firmly believe she never got over Onassis's death, 2 &1/2 years prior, and the true cause of this tragedy was a broken heart. Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2019 Verified Purchase This is a state of the art rehash of material you've likely already seen elsewhere un-gussied-up. Calllas was a great artist but a terrible interview, fatuous and grand, fatally susceptible to the notion of herself as a glamor puss. This tells us nothing of what it was that made her great, but it is clear that she simply could not be otherwise. The director of this assemblage is a newcomer to all this business, and the oddly tone-deaf narrator is Joyce di Donato, who can't conceivably have listened to any playback. A dud. Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2019 Verified Purchase This DVD does not work. This is the 3rd DVD by Maria Callas you have sent and will not work on my DVD player. I just recently bought seven DVD's, Boy Erased, Can You Ever Forgive Me, The Wife, Vice, Collette, The Bookshop and the Happy Prince and they all played perfectly. So I doubt it's my DVD player as I not only play new selections, I play recordings of movies, documentaries, I have recorded over the years, (I have over 300. ) I have spent $4. 49 to return two DVDs. I now have to go to the post office again and spend more postage to return the 3rd DVD. How do you suggest I purchase this DVD by Maria Callas? Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2019 Verified Purchase If you actually love opera and if you revere Callas as a singer, then a documentary about her in which names like Tullio Serafin and Luchino Visconti never occur even once can only be a major disappointment. I would love to see a documentary that took seriously Callas’s revolutionary impact on her art, but no instead all we get here is the sad story of the Diva and the men who abused her (Meneghini, Bing, Onassis). Callas as victim in other words. The Callas who helped revive a somnolent art form, and whose recordings still set the standard for her successors was no victim, and that is the Callas I was hoping to learn more about. Reviewed in the United States on July 19, 2019 Verified Purchase Wonderfully moving tale of a superb artist, a woman far before her own time. I saw her Tosca once at the Old Met, (slept out for 2 nights to get tickets) and for me her interpryof Tosca was so real, so innovative that it was as though I had never seen it before. My heart ached as I felt her suffering through so much unhappiness. A true Greek heroine! Wonderful film! Great insight into the great Callas! Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2019 Verified Purchase Perhaps my expectations were a bit too high, but I couldn't help finding this "new" documentary utterly disappointing. I thought it was a messy, disjointed, pretentious affair, with very little "never-previously-seen" footage, completely disregarding chronology, constantly jumping back and forth through her life and career, almost totally ignoring the great glory days of Mexico City, La Scala, Chicago, etc., borrowing freely from several previous (and much better organized) documentaries... Needless to add that I'm truly puzzled by all the positive reviews it received, which I find entirely undeserved. Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2019 Verified Purchase what a terrible, abominable way to pay tribute with old rehashed footage and the worst editing ever! do yourself a favor and skip this one Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2019 Verified Purchase An operatic documentary into this diva’s struggle with fame, and how it interfered with and then became her ability to connect and feel loved. She continued to reject and embrace it throughout her life. Also, it takes a compassionate view of her tempestuous reputation as it ought to. It’s actually endearing and quite sad at times that she is flawed. It exposes how fame creates paranoia and the importance and cruelty of the relatable Rome incident. The footage is exquisite and it’s elegance is reminiscent of a different era of celebrity. Volf’s method is consistent and ingenious as he uses mostly public Callas footage to paint an intimate portrait. It’s not the point to be comprehensive. This director has delivered a gift and Callas is looking down and nodding that time has exposed the truth as she said in many interviews by prodding journalists. Sent from my iPhone Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2019 Verified Purchase We bailed after trying to watch this documentary for almost 20 minutes because it was extremely difficult to follow. There is no narration, only choppy jumps from footage to random readings of Callas' accounts with a voiceover. There is no story, and we were left thinking the only person who might enjoy watching this is an extreme devotee of Callas who already knows minuscule details and the timeline of her life. A waste of $5 for the rental, for sure. Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2019 Verified Purchase A bit disappointed. The earlier documentary (1980’s) was much more honest and revealing.
